“Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.” – President Dwight Eisenhower
Through Information and Communications Technology (ICT), AMIS-Cameroon aims to connect farmers with the vital information they need to succeed and survive. Specifically, farmers receive SMS messages with current information about market supply and demand, export opportunities and sustainable farming practices. By bridging this information gap, AMIS-Cameroon ultimately strives to boost sustainable agricultural activities that will promote the UN’s Millennium Development Goals 1, 3, 7, and 8.
These ICTs also create connections between farmers and agricultural technicians who encourage them to support each other through mutual advice and knowledge sharing. Without roads linking these farmers and agricultural experts year round, the information and expert advice offered through SMS allow farmers to maximize the return on their investment, produce high quality crops, and provide food to Cameroonian citizens at modest prices.
