AMIS-CAMEROON WINS FELLOWSHIP SLOT AT OPPORTUNITY COLLABORATION IN IXTAPA MEXICO

Of all Social Entrepreneurs in CAMEROON, it is becoming an undeniable fact that AMIS-CAMEROON is Leading the path for other Local Organizations to follow. We are not in competition, we are in Collaboration. To this effect we extend our hand and ask you all to JOIN US for the sake of the Farmers we all Serve.

AMIS-CAMEROON is a hybrid (profit & not-for-profit) non-governmental organization that employs simple Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to specifically address the communication needs of farmers and consumers. Sometimes it is just impossible for consumers with an ever dwindling budget to get a week’s ration and avoid starvation. At the same time farmers often find it impossible to locate consumers who need their products. While one group starves out of want, another group ironically dumps its products because it doesn’t know which market needs them. AMIS-CAMEROON was created with these uninformed segments that constitute over 70% of the 20million Cameroonian populations in mind.
What We Do
At AMIS-CAMEROON we work very hard to identify the critical agricultural challenges which small scale farmers face. We then devise solutions to address these challenges which result in farmers producing more food, earning more income that distances  them and their families from living under the bondage of poverty and the 2 Dollar daily survival jinx.We coordinate the activities of close to 70% of the 20 Million Cameroonian Farming workforce. Starting from basic consultation with Agricultural Stakeholders and state institutions whom we request to provide seeds to enable needy farmers have a successful planting season, we also hire agricultural field workers to monitor and offer expert advice on how farmers should treat the soil and continually tend after their plants until the harvest period. Through our constant descent into the field, we have established a reputation as a Trusted Partner to Cameroonian Farmers.

The Constraints and What we Do To Mitigate Losses

One of the constraints we identified is that farmers generally “farm in the dark” and realise just too late that the decisions they took shall be counter-productive. Common sense suggests that they should get informed advice before launching their farming activities. But this is hardly possible because of the absence of agricultural technicians to give them timely advice. The bad state of the roads before and after the planting season makes it impossible even for agricultural technicians to visit farmers even on voluntary basis and offer them help.

In order to address this communication problem, we have been using bulk SMS sending tools to push information to farmers who dont have the luxury  of a face to face meeting with  agricultural technicians. We employ the same bulk SMS to bring together farmers and consumers into a common market and mutually beneficial relationship where diverse consumer and producer groups experience satisfaction that is commensurate to their endless needs and limited means.By connecting Farmers to ready markets where they can sell their products, we assure a noble livelihood for farmers, boost their confidence and foster agro- production on a large scale that assures constant food supplies for every Cameroonian household. Reserves from excess production no longer get dumped, but find their way as exports to neighbouring countries. Our constant descent to the field to talk with farmers gives us the rare opportunity to regularly update ourselves about the many problems affecting the farmers over specific periods and enables our team come up with practical solutions and suggestions that target these problems early on.
